To walk a mile in my shoes -  before judging someone, you must understand his experiences, challenges, thought processes, etc. The full idiom is:  Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. 
E.g. I know that certain people can come across as selfish or mean-spirited, but you should try walking a mile in their shoes before you dismiss them too quickly.
