“Age appears best in four things: old wood to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust and old authors to read.” And what do you think? How do you understand this quote? Do you agree or disagree? As always, you have to explain why? Have a nice weekend!

  1. I completely agree with Francis Bacon's quote, "Age seems best in four things: old wood to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust, and old writers to read".
As for me, the first three look very similar. As the older wood is more heat and smell it will bring. The whole "life" of wood takes everything from nature, for example, living through hurricanes, floods, forest fires, and various natural disasters make the trees "stronger". That which does not kill us makes us stronger.

Old wine is good wine! It is well-known fact that the more time wine spends in the barrel than better it will be. Wine takes the history of its winemaker, the field, where the vine was grown and the WOODEN barrel where it stayed.

Аbout our friends all the same. After we have met them we have become just acquaintances, but after we have spent the huge amount of time after we have overcome many "hurricanes, floods, forest fire" and other life difficulties, we can trust them and name them real friends

Maybe I'm wrong, but with old writers, there is a bit another meaning. Because in ancient times the writers wrote more honest and their best feature was realism and the way they described the world of their time that sometimes is equal to ours. And even old authors are great because their famous is recognized by many generations.

  2. I agree with this opinion. First of all, "old wood to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust and old authors to read" are associated with some kind of home warmth and comfort. Every old thing carries some spiritual attribute of its owner or the place where it was.
    1. "Old wood to burn". I understand that in the course of time everything changes, some trees are cut down, burned or sent to some factories, and in their place grow new strong trees that need to survive their history. Today there are still trees that reach more than 1000 years. People changed, scientific progress was up, the countries and their names changed, and only those trees remained stable and invincible. Old trees are a symbol of strength and history.
    2. "Old wine to drink". In my opinion, it is no secret to anyone that wine is older, so it is more valued and the more it costs. Like wood, wine has a certain history, and the energy of its owner. But the extract of wine does not affect its taste, and in some it even spoils it. Wine is comparable to a living organism: it grows older, becomes mature, then begins to grow old and, eventually, dies. At the moment, old wine is a manifestation of luxury, because not everyone can afford very expensive wine.
    3. "Old friends to trust". Old friends are people we know for a long time and with whom we have survived both good and bad. These people are checked by time and events, so we can trust them and rely on them. Not for nothing they say: "Friends are known under the weather".
    4. "Old authors to read". By reading the old books of ancient writers, we can not only enjoy their exquisite language, but also learn something interesting about the time they lived. Some writers write autobiographical stories and this is also very interesting, because the time changes, people change, new rules appear, a new fashion, even a new style of communication, and personally reading such works is interesting to me to compare the present world with those time. So, reading the old books, we are first and foremost developing.

  3. I think I'm too young to fully enjoyed by old wine.
Of course it's great to sit at home, burn an old tree, drink old wine with old trusted friends and read old books. I agree that this statement has a profound sense. Only the time can separate the real friends from other people in our life. And when I become older, I will fully estimate old, as I, wood to burn in my own houses' fireplace during I read an interesting book by old authors.
Now I'm forced to read works by old authors proposed by school program and wait for holidays to read something more interesting and new. The only old tree that I can burn now is the tree from which the school is made. Even if I want to drink an old wine, it will be too expensive for me to buy. Just because I'm a teenager that haven't own money :D. Now I need to find a lot of friends who later will be separated by the time.
That's why right now I am running to spend my young years not in vain, and then enjoy four best things from this quote.

  4. I don’t really understand this quote. This one is hard for me and I don’t know why. And maybe my explanation is not really correct and right and different from what Francis Bacon wanted to say by it. Okay, so first this is old wood to burn. I think this means that we have our memories from all our life, we have what “to burn”, to remember , to analyze all out life and understand what we had done wrong, maybe to understand that our life could be another one. And sometimes we have memories to forget, things that we don’t want to remember. Old wine to drink… I think about memories again. When we are in age, we have moments from our life that we want to remember forever. And like wine, with every year these memories become more and more valuable, and sometimes we want to live them again. And I think the easy one to understand is “old friends to trust”. Only people who went through all disasters in your life, supported every time when you needed it and kicked your ass when you wanted to give up, only they can to share all “wine” and “burn all wood” with you. And what about “old authors to read”? I can only suppose that it is not only about ancient authors who wrote in different century about love, adventures or even about future, in some way they had other world. I think age is time when you can reread your favourite authors and remember what you had learnt from their books, and what you did wrong.
I don’t know if I agree or disagree. I just need to make bright moments with my friends, I need wine that I will drink in my age, I need to cut down all wood that then I will burn, and to read all authors that I will remember.
    I think I have written some nonsense…

  5. I must say, that I mostly agree with this quote. And I want to say a few words about each of these four things.
    1. First and maybe the most simple thing for me to explain is 'old wine to drink'. It's well-known fact, that the taste of wine becomes more and more better, when it is older.
    2. Second thing is 'old friends to trust'. I completely agree with this. Because only friends, who were with you, when you were in trouble or had some difficulties, can be trusted and called true friends.
    3. Third thing is 'old authors to read'. While we're reading an old book, it's like kind of teleportation to the times when the book was written. Also, while reading a book, we have a chance to learn something about ancient times and their history.
    4. What about 'old wood to burn'? Everyone knows that old wood burns much more better than young one, and gives off more heat. And you can imagine sitting in front of the fireplace, drinking tea with your friends and you can just forget about all your problems and difficulties and just enjoy yourself.
    Thank you❤

  6. On my opinion Francis Bacon tell us to understand old things. Everything old trusted and passed many time and It not so bad what other tells.

Russians say: "An one hundred friends is better than 100 rubles". Of course, an old friend knows you and your habits well, he/she is always there for you, and he/she will never lie you. What about new friends in your life? They probably know you, but they won't understand you as well as your old friend does. I think Bacon say that friendship is like wine - the older it is, the better it becomes. Such as Shardone☺.

Also "old wood" can understand as quarreling, debts and other bad things with other people. We need to explain us what is our and others bad sides, forget and fix them forever. Every will agree with me that oldest and uniquely things is more compatible than newer.

Eventually what you will choose - new phone with best CPU, GPU and memory or older phone with "titan" protection such as Nokia 3310. In our time Internet isn't best than books, TV, etc. Many people usually used it to play games or simply to mockingly show other that he/she have more money. Also with Nokia 3310 you can destroy cities and with small chance our planet so it is god-power thing. Also you can play game "Ball" or phone other people in "very good" linking :)
So It's my opinion and I can explain more, but number of words is very small, so I think upper text is fully explain the theme.

    Good evening, thank's for reading!

  7. “Age appears best in four things: old wood to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust and old authors to read.” I absolutely agree with this quote. We always appreciate more things or relationships that have been tested through the years and we are sure in them.

1."Old wood to burn". I think that, the older the tree, the more heat it will give. The house also need to build with old and durable wood, because it will be stronger than the young tree.

    2. "Old wine to drink". We all know that wine of long aging is very tasty. This wine is very appreciated by the real gourmets.

3."Old friends to trust". I trust only old friends ,because I know them. They were with me for better or worse. I know that friends will always help me, and I also will support them.

4."Old authors to read". I love to read books the old authors . Earlier people had other problems, other moral and material values than modern humans. And it is interesting to learn about ancient times!

  8. I totally agree with Francis Bacon. I think that a tree that has been standing for many years slowly dies and there is nothing bad to burn it and make space for another tree. Maybe this thought refers to not only wood and trees. I am not sure if Francis Bacon wants to say something more with this words but I understand this in that way: we should refuse from some things in our life to give free rein some new things. Everyone knows that over the years wine become more and more tasty. The most expensive wines are the oldest wines. So some things achieve perfection with age. Old friends are the best friends to trust. As for me, this is the main part of Francis quote. I made sure of this by myself. I had so many friends but when I was abroad for two years just old friends were with me all the time. So I think that time this is the best test for people and only a few friends will support us in a difficult moment. The last part of this quote means that real art is immortal and over the years many pieces of art were forgotten but truly masterpieces don’t apply to fashion or trends, they are eternal. Some authors make us imbued with a book. So that’s why there are so many books in the world but only a few won’t be forgotten with years.

  9. Francis Bacon said : “Age appears best in four things: old wood to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust and old authors to read.”
Yes it is well known fact that old wood burns better than young one.
I don't drink wine, but I suppose that old wine tastes better than new one. However it is matter of taste.
As for authors, I like reading both classic and modern literature.
But the only thing in this quote I fully agree with is "the old friends to trust". Because I have already understood that real friendship gets stronger with time. As the saying goes : " A friend in need is a friend indeed ". Real friends will always support you in bad days and will share your joy in good days.
But overall I agree with Francis Bacon.

  10. I don't think that this quote is completely true. Everything has its expiration date. The wood crumbles, even the best wine with the time turns into vinegar. People who you call your best friends stab you in the front and authors lose their validity.

Of course, it's only my pessimistic view but in my opinion things are good till some moment and then they lose their price. And, as for me, new things, people and events have their own beauty. So don't wait when your bottle of wine become 20-year-old, meet new people and don't live in memories. Like James Hetfield sings: "Every day for us something new, open mind for a different views and nothing else metters". :)

  11. For me, age has always been associated with something cozy like interesting books, warm fireplace and old furniture. Yes, "age" is not exactly a material or real thing. But I think every thing in our world can be compared with something, even if such kind of things don't really exist.
We can't touch or feel age, but it can influence us, our mind and our things. Everything become better because of age. Do the growing or freshly cut tree burn? No. And it saves our planet from fires. Can the old man tell us how to be kind and patient? Yes. He saw a lot in his life. Now he is old and wise. Books, wine, people - when the time goes we all and our things become better.
I think it is awesome. Nothing in this life is easy and quick. To get something you need to work hard and be patient. But for teenagers all of this are just words. You can understand the whole truth only when you grow old. When the time passes you will understand what age is.

  12. Yea, it really is. I agree with this uttering at all. Lets explain every part of this quote one by one. I want to start from old friend. I can't truth my friend if i only know him for many years, i can tell him my important information or secrets if i kept in touch with him all this years. Next part is about old wood. I only know If somebody burn old tree or wood, it will give away more heat and will burn better. About wine I can say nothing, because i did not taste it, but i know that old wine is more expensive and delicious. The last part is about books. I think we all knows old authors and books they have wrote. And there is nothing to tell, really.

  13. So, Francis Bacon's quote : “Age appears best in four things: old wood to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust and old authors to read” is really hard to perceive. To my mind, this quote means that fourty years later we will become admirer of good old vine, have a few friends we really trust and share our experience with other people and offer life lessons. But, I think it's not cool. Meet new people, drink vine with them, just relax and have fun. We must enjoy our life. Of cource, everyone has his own mind and desire, but, please, never say that someone do something wrong, it's his life and his choise. Maybe, I'm so young to decide what is most important for people, but I am sure that we must enjoy every moment of our life.

  14. I like this quote and I completely agree with it. It can be understood literally. The old tree burns well. By the time tree dries up. Old wine is much tastier. Over time, the wine acquires an unusual taste. As vine becomes older, as more valuable and expensive it is. The old friends are time-tested. They are true and will never betray or cast away. Old writers are very wise. They have more experience and they can share it with us. But I think the main point of this quote is "by the age not all becomes bad "With this, I also agree, and I think that many things age makes better. Zohnny Depp for example,XD)

  15. I'm completely agree with the quote “Age appears best in four things: old wood to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust and old authors to read” . It must be said that I understand this quote in different ways really and figuratively. So I want to tell you about my thoughts.
Firstly about 'old wood to burn', it's well known fact that old dead trees must be cut down because they can't clean air and young, green ones which will help our atmosphere must be planted on that place. But old wood can heat your house. I think it symbolizes all negative of our live: hatred, fear, frustrations and others. They exactly can't help us make our lives better. But we can turn our energy in the right direction, we can love, be confident and reach new peaks.
Secondly, as for old wine, it's not a secret that the older wine is, the better taste it has. Only after many years wine acquires unique flavour. It can bring us enjoyment. I think that 'wine' it's our experience, memories and ability to make a conclusions. When we know how avoid troubles our life become better.
Thirdly old friends to trust, it's about people who share with you all happiness and grief and who help you in difficult situations. I think that 'friends' it's not only about friends it's about people around us, it can be colleagues, classmates, neighbours. You can trust only those who were tried by time.
And the last one old authors to read, it's clearly that old authors had another vision of the world and they help us saw one or another situation from different sides. In my opinion 'old athours ' are wise people who have more experience than we and we must follow their advice to achieve success.
To sum up with if you will 'burn old wood', 'drink old wine', 'trust old friends ' and 'read old athours ' one day you will sit in front of the fire place with you old friends, drink old wine and talk about book of old athour and feel yourself as good as you can.

  16. I mostly agree with Francis Bacon's quote: "Age seems best in things: old wood to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust and old authors to read". In our world, people very afraid of old age. They want to stay young all their lives. But for me, a old age is associated more with an experience and a wisdom than with an illness and a death. A person gets interesting over years like a wine that becomes more and more exquisite and noble. Everybody knows that old woods burn better than young branches. And, of course, people gets stronger like old woods over the years, although they don't so limber in their actions as in their younger years.
As to the third part of the quote, I think that old friends are the best friends. Because you have gone through a lot of trouble with them. And they stay with you. The last part of this quote isn't really relevant nowadays. Although I like reading, to my opinion, It is better to say: "old music to listen". Because only old songs, which you have listened for many years, are associated with some history and memories for you. They have a certain atmosphere that other songs don't have.

  17. I agree with this opinion.
1.old wood to burn.I understand this so we need to give the road to the younger generation. Since the younger generation is our future.
2 "Old wine to drink". As we know that wine is older, so it is more valued and the more it costs.tak and with cheloveches.cht man lives more so he knows more. the person develops every day.
3 "Old friends to trust". as for me this is the most important thing. old friends are those people with whom you have long been acquainted and have passed a lot with them. such friends can be trusted and even not to think.
4 "Old authors to read "when we read old books we can find out what happened many years before you, as people used to live in. In these books you can learn the history of the creation of your city or country. for this reason old books are very useful and helps to develop outlook.

  18. I agree with this statement, only I would add some new points.
    1. The old tree, because it burns well, that would be warmed by the fireplace.
    2. Old wine to have a good time with friends.
    3. Old friends whom you trust and you can rely on them, with which you can drink the old wine by the fire.
    4. Old writers to read. They lived a long life and their books can teach you something.
5.A good house to live in.To spend time with friends.
6.A good job to earn money to buy a house and other.
    7. And the main is a cute cat. ^_^

  19. I agree with Age appears best in four things: old wood to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust and old authors to read.
The old wine - good wine and it is fact.It is known that the longer wine wanders the better it on the taste.Than older people so it more experienced and more knows about life. Old Wood burn - is therefore not regret the fact that it was made in past. I completely agree with these. old friends to доверять.Than older one the more you can him trust. How do you much have been together and believe to each other. read old autors. It is means to get a new experience.

  20. In I agree with this expression. But I not quite understand the first point, if it can be so named, about wood. And that is why will not about this something write, because it will be some delirium, I will not be able to explain a that thing that I do not understand. To the last points I fully agree.
It is said that old wine - tastier, through the self-control and that is why old wine far more expensive. I will not appeal it, so however I wasn't worth it and apparently I will trust in this idea, and will consider that it in actual fact so.
My favourite point is about friendship and trust. I disbelieve that old friends are. It even sounds somehow not so. I consider that old friends are those people with that you got through a fire and water, it is those people with that you can talk about all in the world, those people that you are supported always are ready always to help you, to work out all your problems. And it is usually possible to trust such people.
Books. Books is good. I think that all love the classics, it is simply impossible not to love. It is those books that is filled with the particles of the past and it sufficiently interestingly for our generation. In those books you can find an answer for all questions. And about love, and about friendship, and about family, and about work, and about happiness. About everything. The classics - it always modernly. And in our world it is necessary to be able to be modern.
    Forgive for a delay.

  21. It is very interesting quote..

I completely agree with that old wood burns better than younger wood, old wine is better than new, old friends are better to trust and old books are better for reading.

Actually, I think that “old wood to burn, old wine to drink” not about wood and wine. First of all it is about human… My father once said ”No one is born wise” and he’s right. Wisdom comes with age. And only one who will learn from his mistakes will gain wisdom. A person without life experience can have someone else's "wisdom", subtracted from "smart" books. And you can get your own only after your own mistakes…

“Old friends to trust”. It is very simple…I think that true friends comes, like wisdom, with age. When we were kids, every single stranger was our friend. In adolescence, we begin to understand who is it - a “real” friend. Teenagers like to spend time with their “real” friends. But I noticed that with age people have fewer and fewer friends.
How many “real” friends do you have and do you agree with my theory??

    1. "...do you agree with my theory??"
Ok, I must admit, you are one heck of a writer:))) You covered the topic as usual fairly to the point. I like the way you put old wood and old wine in context of wisdom.
"How many “real” friends do you have?"
If to speak about REAL real friends - not many:(( Real friends are called "REAL" 'cos these people really know who & what you are, they love you & support you even if the whole world stands against you. If we have one or two such friends in our life, it means that gods are smiling at us:)
"But I noticed that with age people have fewer and fewer friends. " - I don't think it's really connected with age. Francis Bacon said another quote "Friends are thieves of our time" - maybe that's where the trouble lies... What do you think? 😃

      Delete
    2. I meant that with time, we have fewer and fewer friends for multiple reasons:
We lose some friends for "technical" reasons, namely because of the quality of our life, our interests, environment, social status, family, children and there are times when the difference between this all brings discomfort in communication. Many friends disappear because of the fact that in unusual situations, friends behaved incorrectly.

"Friends are thieves of our time." I believe that this is not entirely true, because real friends can not steal anything from us, even if it is time. A true friend is always near us, but he is correctly estimate the importance of our time. Friendship is unselfish and therefore doesn’t take away our time, but properly complements it.

Thank you for a really interesting topic for thinking))
